1974–1978 Velenje Grammar School
1978–1983 Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana; obtained a master’s degree in 1990
1983–1990 Adviser to the Analysis and Research Centre of the Bank of Slovenia
1990–1991 Assistant Director at the Analysis and Research Centre of the Bank of Slovenia
1991–2000 Recruited by the World Bank, Washington D.C., U.S.A.; participated in banking and corporate reform projects in several Central and Eastern European transition countries, led post-war reconstruction projects in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and was a loan programming expert for several other countries. Received a World Bank Award for Excellence in recognition of work performed. Seconded to Slovenia from 1997 to 2000.
1997–1998 Director of the Centre for Analyses, Research and Counselling of Nova Ljubljanska Banka; also in charge of the project aimed at transferring banking knowledge to other banks in the region.
1998–2000 State Secretary at the Ministry of Finance; responsible for drafting the state budget and for public finance, and led negotiations with the European Union in relation to the Economic and Monetary Union and public finance.

2004 Elected deputy of the National Assembly. Chair of the Commission for Public Finance Control. From April 2007, Chair of the Commission of Inquiry to determine the political responsibility of public office holders involved in the purchase of 8x8 armoured vehicles and the 1991–1993 arms trade.
